Why Wine Tastes Different at 7,500 Feet

Visitors are often surprised that their favorite wine tastes a little different up here. At altitude, lower air pressure and drier air can dull our sense of smell and taste, which is why aromas can seem muted and tannins can feel sharper.

Go a touch more aromatic. Wines with expressive noses — Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Malbec — tend to shine in the mountains because they have aroma to spare.

Alcohol also hits a bit faster at elevation, especially if you've just spent the day hiking. Drink a glass of water for every glass of wine, and take your time. Our velvet chairs are made for lingering anyway.
